Kealakai, Mekia - one of 13 children, he was sent to Reform School at age 12 for truancy. His musical talent was recognized by Henri Berger who taught him music theory and to play the trombone, flute, and piano. He joined the Royal Hawaiian Band at age 15, a fine trombonist and an even better flutist. John Philip Sousa, the great American bandmaster called Kealakai "the greatest flutist he had ever heard". He served the Royal Hawaiian Band 40 years, becoming the bandmaster from 1920-1926, and again, in 1930-32. He toured the United State and Europe for 20 years. His composing skills were such that he could compose on the spot, but unfortunately, many of his compositions have been lost or not credited to him.
