Mālama ʻIa Me ʻOe - Music by Oscar Strauss

Mālama ʻia me ʻoe
Ke aloha e lei aʻi

Hîpuʻu ʻia me ʻoe
Ke koʻiʻi koi a loko

Kāhiko ʻia me ʻoe
Ka ʻiʻini a ka puʻuwai

Pāpahi paʻa me ʻoe
Ka wehi a mau loa
Cared for with you, is
The love that is as a neck lei

Fastened to you is
The desire insistent within

Adorned with you is
The heart’s desire

An honor lasting with you
An ornament forever

He kept abreast of music from his home in Austria and when the Strauss operetta “Gypsy Baron" was produced in Vienna, 1885, Berger arranged the music for the Royal Hawaiian Band. The Hawaiian lyrics were added soon after. Translator unknown
