Nani Ao Kona - Words & Music by Anthony. K. Conjugacion

Ua nani a‘o Kona lāʻ
I ke kai malino me ka ‘ōlinolino

Linohau i ka mālie lā ‘eā
Māhie ‘o Hualālai me ka hanohano

Hanohano i ka leo o ka manu lā ‘eā
A he manu me ka mele na ke Akua

Kū kilakila o ka rose lā ‘eā
‘Ike ‘ia i ka nani ‘anoʻi nei

Nēia mau mele hāliʻa liʻa ‘eā
Puana kaulana nani aʻo Kona

Splendid are you, Kona
Amidst the calm and shimmering seas

Beautifully attired in the tranquility
Delightful is Hualālai with all its glory

Magnificent are the voices of the bird
A bird with a song for the Gods

Stand majestically rose blossom
It's been revealed the beauty of your desire

This song will be recalled fondly evermore
For the famed beauty of Kona
Source: Tony C. - Manaʻo: Composed 1986, in Kona, while driving with musician friends throughout the moku (district) of Kona, and the composer’s origins, Hōlualoa. Singing songs about the area inspired this first mele the composer wrote for his ‘āina hānau (birthplace). The bird in the 3rd verse refers to Jeffrey Rasmussen, who was singing along with Peter Ahia, a mele named “Hosana” or otherwise known as “Ua Mau” a hīmeni from Niʻihau. The 4th verse reference to the rose blossom was directed to Vicki Iʻi Rodrigues and her students they assisted in the Kona Keiki Hula Competition. They won 1st place that year, thus giving the glory to the source of the lineage. © 1986 Published1991, Mountain Apple Co.
