Ke Aliʻi Hulu Mamo - by Helen Beamer

Koʻiʻi ka lehua i ke anu
Kipuʻupuʻu aʻo Waimea

Hanohano ia hale o ka manu
Hulu ʻeʻe aʻo Mealani

A he manu i kūlia i ka nuʻu
Ka ʻOʻo hae a ke kia manu

Welo lua e ka hulu nani i ka laʻi
I ke ani mālie a ka Moaʻe

Hoʻoipo i ke oho o ka lehua
ʻAʻohe lua ke ʻike aku

Puana ke aliʻi hulu mamo
Kalanipoʻo ʻoe e ō mai

Refreshed is the lehua in the chill
Kipuʻupuʻu wind of Waimea

Glorious, this home of the bird
Underwing feathers for the Royal One

As a bird strives to reach the summit
So the ʻOʻo is prized by the hunter

Feathers shimmer as sun gold on a calm sea
Equally beautiful in the gently blowing tradewinds

To love amidst the delicate soft brush of lehua
Nothing equal is known

Proclaim the mamo-feather chief
You are Kalanipoʻo, answer
